Tetanus Diphtheria Pertussis

Tetanus is caused by bacteria that enter the body during an injury or anytime the skin is broken and cannot spread from person to person. is a disease that usually starts out with “lockjaw.” It may progress to more serious symptoms, including seizures and death. Diphtheria starts out like the flu, but can become a severe and even fatal respiratory condition. Pertussis, also known as “Whooping Cough” is characterized by severe coughing and sometimes vomiting, Pertussis is caused by bacteria and be especially dangerous for young children.

Tdap

The Tdap vaccine protects you from tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis. Adults who have never received Tdap should substitute it for their next booster dose. Pregnant women should also receive a single dose of Tdap during every pregnancy. Anyone who may come into contact with infants less than 12 months of age should be vaccinated with Tdap to help prevent the spread of pertussis to young infants.

Td

The Td vaccine has been used for many years and protects you from tetanus and diphtheria. It is only used in people who are seven-years-old or older. There is a different vaccine for those younger than 7. Most people need a booster shot every 10 years or less.
