Frequently Asked Questions

Will holiday closures have an impact on timing for my test results?
Bartell Drugs will not have COVID travel testing appointments available on Thursday, 11/26/2020, Thanksgiving Day, and Friday, 12/25/2020, Christmas Day, and Bridge Diagnostics will be closed both of these days. Bartell Drugs has extended available appointment times into the evening on Monday, 11/23, thru Wednesday, 11/25, to better accommodate our holiday travelers.

If testing appointments are 3 days before travel within 72 hours of the last leg of departure to Hawaii, we will be able to provide timely results. This is always our goal, but due to holiday closures, it is even more important to provide the lab as much time as possible to provide results. Please note, results will not be provided within 48 hours of collection.

Please be aware that if bookings are made within 2 days or less of travel, guests are at increased risk of not having their results in time to avoid quarantine in Hawaii.

If you have questions about your results, please email us at Please include the name the specimen was collected under when emailing Customer Care.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. We look forward to serving you!

When are my results due to be uploaded to the State of Hawaii?
Starting Tuesday, Nov. 24, travelers wanting to bypass Hawaii‘s 14-day mandatory quarantine must have COVID-19 test results, from a trusted travel partner, PRIOR TO DEPARTURE to the islands. If a traveler’s test results are not available before boarding their final flight segment, the traveler must quarantine for 14 days or the length of their stay, whichever is shorter. The new policy applies to domestic transpacific flights and international flights departing from locations in which the State of Hawaii has pre-testing programs in place.

I want to get COVID-19 testing. What are my options?
Currently, there are two different types of tests that are used for different purposes. Viral (molecular or antigen) tests and Antibody (serology) tests. Viral tests will tell you if you have a current (active) COVID-19 infection and are often performed via nasal swab collection. Antibody tests may tell you if you have had a previous (not active) COVID-19 infection and are performed via a blood sample.

Who should get tested and when?
Viral tests: Anyone of any age can get tested based on guidelines. The CDC has guidance for who should be tested, but testing is based off recommendations provided by your state and local health departments or healthcare providers. Ideally, you would be tested if you are showing symptoms related to COVID-19 disease, if you have come in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 or need a screening for travel. If you want to get tested for possible active COVID-19 infection, contact your healthcare provider or visit your state or local health department website to look for latest testing information. If you are not symptomatic and not feeling sick, but rather, are hoping to travel and need a test, you may seek testing with us.

Antibody tests: Currently, you must seek this testing from your physician. If you are symptomatic, you should be tested using a viral test to see if your active symptoms are due to a COVID-19 infection. Bartell Drugs is not currently offering testing for symptomatic patients or people who feel sick. Second, you should wait 14 days or more after you have had symptoms or tested positive for COVID-19 to receive an antibody test. Antibodies take 1-3 weeks to appear in your blood in a large enough concentration to be detected.

What kind of test is Bartell Drugs offering?
In partnership with Bridge Diagnostics, Bartell Drugs is offering COVID-19 Molecular Testing via RT-PCR for screening of symptom-free travelers. This type of testing may also be known as viral testing or nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT). We are NOT currently offering rapid tests, antigen tests, or serological/antibody tests. Again, we are also NOT offering tests to people who feel sick or have symptoms.

Is this only for travelers to the state of Hawaii?
We can provide the appropriate testing results that are needed for the State of Hawaii to avoid the 14-day traveler quarantine. The state of Hawaii only accepts tests from TRUSTED TESTING AND TRAVEL PARTNERS (TTTP), which Bartell Drugs is a member.

Passengers looking for testing options for travel to places other than the state of Hawaii should research the required type of testing that will be accepted by your destination as we will not be able to assist in that regard. For customers traveling internationally, it is necessary to verify with the international destination that the testing done in the US will be acceptable as proof of testing within the prescribed/required time prior to your departure or arrival at your eventual destination.

How will Hawaii know your test is within their 72-hour requirement?
It is important that you schedule your appointment within 72 hours of departure from the last leg of your trip to Hawaii. Specimen collection is time-stamped and provided with your result. For travelers to destinations other than the state of Hawaii, it is important to research the specific testing requirements for your destination to ensure validity of your results.

Do I have to be flying on a certain airline to be eligible for testing at Bartell Drugs?
We can test any symptom-free traveler regardless of airline. The results will be accepted in Hawaii because of Bartell Drugs’ Trusted Testing and Travel Partners (TTTP) status.

Why are some COVID-19 tests free and this one costs money?
Since we are only testing symptom-free travelers, we are not billing insurance, and thus the fee is an out-of-pocket expense to the patient. Some testing sites may be billing insurance or have other means of covering the cost, but we do not.

At what age are patients allowed to test?
Any age, but the parent/guardian will have to swab the child. Hawaii doesn’t require tests or quarantine for children under 5 years old. We allow the minimum number of patients in the testing room per appointment (e.g. limit one parent with one child in the testing room at a time).

If I'm traveling with my family, can we all be in the testing room together?
We limit the number of people in the testing room to the minimum necessary, such as one parent/guardian with one child at a time. Please be mindful of social distancing guidelines in our waiting rooms and throughout the store.

When/how will I get my results?
PCR COVID-19 test results will be emailed to you within 72 hours of collection. Please note, test results will NOT be emailed within 48 hours of collection. You will receive an email from with instructions on how to view your results. Please check your junk or spam folders if you do not receive the email in your inbox.
If you have questions about your results, please email us at Please include the name the specimen was collected under when emailing Customer Care. Bartell Drugs and Bridge Diagnostics are pleased to offer this testing and we thank you for the opportunity to serve you.

What if my flight is delayed such that my test is outside of the 72 hours window?
The Hawaii State Department of Health Travel FAQ’s website indicates that if your flight is delayed, the validity of your results is NOT impacted.

What if I want to change/cancel my appointment?
For cancellations, please call the pharmacy to place this request. For adjustments to an existing appointment, please book your desired appointment and call the pharmacy to request cancellation of appointments no longer need.

Can I test same-day?
No, our process does not support same day booking at this time. You must book an appointment 24+ hours in advance to afford the necessary social distancing requirements in our pharmacy waiting area. This also allows time for our staff to review your screening questionnaire.

Is this the test that goes way back in my throat?
No. The specimen is self-collected with a small swab that goes about one-half inch into each of your nostrils (one-quarter inch for small children). The collection itself should take 30 seconds or less. There will be a pharmacist there to walk you through the process and answer any questions you may have.

Is this a rapid test?
No. Test results will be emailed to you within 72 hours of collection. Please note, test results will NOT be emailed within 48 hours of collection.

Can I pay with my HSA account?

What if my result shows "detected" for COVID-19?
This means you have tested positive for active COVID-19 infection. If you test positive for COVID-19, or get sick after you are exposed to someone with COVID-19, you can help stop the spread of COVID-19 to others. Please follow the guidance from the Washington State Department of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. COVID-19 is a notifiable condition and these results will be reported to the appropriate public health authority. Please contact your healthcare provider with questions about your result.

PLEASE REMEMBER: Regardless of your test results, you must protect yourself and others from COVID-19. This includes:

  • Washing your hands often
  • Avoiding close contact (maintain at least 6 ft apart from others)
  • Wearing a face covering while in public places where social distancing is not possible
  • Covering your mouth and nose with a cloth face cover when around others
  • Covering coughs and sneezes
  • Cleaning and disinfecting the space around you.
