Storm season is upon us. Our PNW climate may not bring hurricanes or whiteout blizzards, but our wind, rain, and notorious black ice can still throw a wrench in our daily routines. Fortunately, a little prep and planning can go a long way to keep you and your family safe during a winter storm. Start by putting together an emergency kit for your home and car.

For Your Car
In addition to snow tires, road flares and chains for your vehicle, it’s a great idea to pack some things for yourself in case you get stranded in your vehicle during a storm (remember the dreaded commute of fall 2010?). Here’s a list of items we recommend having at-the-ready:

  • Warm blanket or sleeping bag
  • Gloves
  • Water
  • Non-perishable food such as mixed nuts or energy bars
  • Flashlight & batteries
  • Reflective vest (in case you need to step outside your vehicle)

For Your Home
Although you may have some of these items around your home already, take the time to organize and place them in one, easily accessible location. You don’t want to wait until a power outage to go rummaging through the junk drawer for extra batteries.

  • Water
  • Non-perishable food
  • Flashlight & batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Hand crank radio
  • Medications
  • Wet wipes
  • Personal care items
  • Extra food for your pets
  • A good book or board game to entertain your family
