SEATTLE—Bartell Drugs and the Medic One Foundation have teamed up to provide a simple, new tool designed to help save lives in an emergency situation. Bartell’s is offering the Vial of L.I.F.E. (Lifesaving Information for Emergencies) at all of its stores in King, Snohomish and Pierce counties.
Emergency first responders are trained to look for the containers in refrigerators upon arrival at a residence. The Vial of L.I.F.E. consists of a 5-inch “prescription” plastic vial containing medical forms with an individual’s medical history.
“The Vial of L.I.F.E. Program is designed to speak for you when you are unable to speak for yourself. The vial contains important medical information that can assist emergency personnel in administering the proper medical treatment,” said Jan Sprake, executive director of the Medic One Foundation.
Bartell Drugs offers the life-saving tool for $1.00, with more than half of the net proceeds donated to The Medic One Foundation. The foundation supports the Medic One response system that enjoys an international reputation for innovation and excellence in pre-hospital emergency care.
According to Sprake, the Vial of L.I. F.E. will be particularly useful for seniors, disabled individuals and persons who live alone. Every vial comes with a blank medical information form, a Vial of L.I.F.E. sticker and magnet.
Here is how it works:
1) Complete the form with all vital medical information, make sure it is legible and current. Also include a copy of Power of Attorney and/or “Do not resuscitate.”
2) Put the completed form (s) in the vial and place it on the top shelf inside the refrigerator door.
3) Put the Vial of L.I.F.E. sticker on the front of the door of your house or an adjacent window.
4) Place the magnet on the front of the refrigerator.
