Bartell’s partnership with the Seattle Animal Shelter
helps make animals happier and healthier

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

SEATTLE—Local animals awaiting adoption at the Seattle Animal Shelter will be a little happier this year thanks to the efforts of several local businesses.  Bartell Drugs, in cooperation with Kodak Processing Labs and Petco, will present the shelter with a $5,400 donation to help purchase blankets, toys and other necessary items for “pets-in-waiting” on Thursday, January 23 at 1:00 p.m. at the shelter--2061 15th Avenue West, Seattle.

The donation is the result of funds generated during Bartell’s annual Super Pet Photo Contest, which has generated over $30,000 for the shelter over the last seven years.

“Happy and healthy animals are more adoptable, which is why this ongoing contribution is such a big help to the shelter each year,” said Don Jordan, manager of the shelter and the city’s pet adoption programs. “With it we are able to provide a more comfortable and stimulating environment for shelter animals, resulting in happier and healthier adoptees.”

In conjunction with the donation, Bartell’s announced the winners of the 2002 Super Pet Photo Competition.  The first place winners are Patty and Mick T. of Seattle and their dog.  Second place went to Jayme M. of Sammamish and the five third place winners are Kathryn C. of Seattle, Elizabeth R. of Seattle, Richard G. of Kirkland, Tami O. of Renton and Cathi W. of Bellevue.

The inspiration behind the contest came from a little female kitten that had been struck by two cars on Elliott Avenue one rainy February day in 1995.  A now retired executive from Kodak Processing Labs rescued the kitten and rushed it to the nearby Seattle Animal Control Shelter.

He was so impressed by the caring nature of the officer at the shelter that he wanted to make a donation.  The officer suggested toys for the shelter animals and shortly thereafter Bartell’s, Kodak Film and Kodak Processing Labs created the contest.

The Bartell Drug Company is the nation’s oldest drugstore chain.  The family-owned company has 50 stores in King, Snohomish, and Pierce counties.
