FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
SEATTLE— It’s birthday time at Bartell Drugs, and area residents will get a glimpse of its colorful history during a special Memorial Day weekend promotion at Seattle’s Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI).
Celebrating 112 years of serving the Puget Sound area, Bartell Drugs has teamed up with MOHAI to offer a reduced admission of $1.12 May 25-27. A display featuring the Bartell Drug Company history will be located in museum’s lobby, where visitors can also enter to win an authentic 1890 silver dollar.
“We’ve grown with Seattle and the Puget Sound area. My grandfather would be amazed at the changes, and proud to be part of the communities we serve,” said George D. Bartell, CEO and Chairman of the 50-store chain.
Founded in 1890 by George H. Bartell, the company has had the distinction of being the first discount pharmacy in Seattle, the first chain in the west with in-store soda fountains and film development, and the nation’s first drugstore in a major regional shopping center—Seattle’s Northgate Mall. The company has been headed by three generations of Bartell’s—George H. Bartell, George H. Bartell Jr. and George D. Bartell.
“The only time my grandfather wavered was when the ‘Gold Rush’ hit in the Klondike. Like most everybody else in town at the time, he dropped everything and headed north,” said the third-generation CEO. The founder returned to continue to run what is now the oldest drugstore chain in the United States.
Bartell’s continues to grow with Puget Sound area neighborhoods with the opening of two new stores in Tacoma and West Seattle later this year. In June, the company will complete an extensive enlargement and refurbishment of their 3rd and Union location in downtown Seattle to better serve downtown residents and office workers.
