FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
SEATTLE—Bartell Drugs, in cooperation with Kodak Processing Labs and Petco, presented the Seattle Animal Shelter with a $5,400 donation to help purchase toys, treats and other necessary items for needy animals.
Representing an increase of more than 25% to the shelter’s operating budget that is set aside for shelter animals and related care, the annual donation has enabled the shelter to boost the number of animals adopted by more than 70% over the last four years, according to Don Jordan, manager of Animal Control.
The donation is the result of funds generated during Bartell’s annual Super Pet Photo Contest, which has generated over $25,000 for the shelter over the last six years.
“This ongoing contribution is a big help to the shelter each year. With it we are able to provide a more comfortable environment for shelter animals, in addition to helping purchase necessary items to help foster parents rehabilitate sick and injured animals,” said Jordan.
“The shelter provides a much needed service for the sick, injured and abandoned animals in our community. It has been our privilege to help facilitate the shelter’s goal of ensuring the comfort of the animals through this donation each year,” said George D. Bartell, chairman and CEO of Bartell Drugs.
In conjunction with the donation, Bartell’s announced the winners of the 2001 Super Pet Photo Competition. The first place winner is Grady M. of Seattle, whose dog Jake was adopted at the Seattle Animal Shelter. Second place went to Jennifer L. of Bellevue and the five third place winners are Debi J. of Seattle, Steve N. of Bothell, Jennine B. of Seattle, Jan J. of Renton and Gary Y. of Seattle
The inspiration behind the contest came from a little female kitten that had been struck by two cars on Elliott Avenue one rainy February day in 1995. A now retired executive from Kodak Processing Labs rescued the kitten and rushed it to the nearby Seattle Animal Control Shelter.
He was so impressed by the caring nature of the officer at the shelter that he wanted to make a donation. The officer suggested toys for the shelter animals and shortly thereafter Bartell’s, Kodak Film and Kodak Processing Labs created the contest.
Founded in 1890, Bartell Drugs is the nation’s oldest drugstore chain. The family-owned company owns and operates 50 stores in King, Snohomish and Pierce counties.
