Human papillomavirus (HPV)

There are many types of human papillomavirus (HPV). Some of the types of HPV are spread by sexual contact. Many people who have an HPV infection don’t show any symptoms and don’t even know they have it. Usually the body will fight the infection on its own, but sometimes the infection can last long enough to cause cancer, especially cervical cancer in women.

Vaccine to help prevent HPV

Gardasil®

The Gardasil® vaccine can help prevent four types of HPV infection, including two types that most commonly cause cervical cancer in females. It is recommended – and is most effective – for females between 9-12 years of age before they become sexually active, but women up to age 26 who have been sexually active may still get vaccinated. In order to be most effective, three shots are given – the second shot is given two months after the first shot, and the third shot is given 6 months after the first shot. Ask your Bartell Drugs pharmacist for more details.
