Tetanus

This is a disease that usually starts out with “lockjaw,” a symptom where the jaw muscles tighten, which can prevent someone from talking or even swallowing. It may progress to more serious symptoms, including seizures and death. It is caused by bacteria that enter the body during an injury or anytime the skin is broken and cannot spread from person to person.

Diphtheria

This is a disease that starts out like the flu and can become so severe that someone may stop breathing and die. It can be spread from person to person through coughing or sneezing.

Pertussis

This is commonly known as “whooping cough” and causes severe coughing (that sounds like “whooping”) and sometimes vomiting. It is caused by bacteria and can be spread from person to person. Pertussis is especially dangerous for young children.

Vaccines to help prevent tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis

There are a few different vaccines available. We offer two: Decavac (Td vaccine) and Adacel (Tdap vaccine).

Decavac

The Td vaccine (Decavac™) has been used for many years and protects you from tetanus and diphtheria. It is only used in people who are seven-years-old or older. (There is a different vaccine for those younger than 7.) Most people need a booster shot every 10 years (or less).

Adacel

The Tdap vaccine (Adacel™) protects you from tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis. It should only be used in people who are 11 to 64 years old. Adults who have never received Tdap, should substitute it for their next booster dose. Anyone who may come in contact with infants (less than 12 months of age) should be vaccinated with Tdap to help prevent spreading pertussis to young infants. Your Bartell Drugs’ pharmacist can help determine the vaccine that is right for you.
