Just as electricity recharges gadgets, love recharges lives.
And just as you have different adapters to recharge your gadgets, there are many love adapters. Gary Chapman, PhD, calls them the 5 Love Languages.
Here are some ideas about how to plug into another person and say, “I love you.” in a way that really makes a connection.
Words. If someone treasures words, you can say “I love you” with spoke words, a text or even a scribbled message on a Post-it note.
Gifts. If your mother still has the potholders you made for her at Girl Scout camp, think gifts. The gifts do not have to be expensive or extravagant; they’re physical tokens that demonstrate you were thinking of them.
Acts of service. If you know someone who's still talking about the time you helped without being, reach for acts of service. The great news is that grocery shopping, vacuuming and washing the dishes become ways to say, ”I love you.’’
Touch. If someone gives hug coupons, think touch. Hold hands. Offer to brush their hair. Give a foot massage.
Time. Believe a friend who says, “I don’t care what we do; I just want to be together.” Find creative ways of spending time together and offering your full attention. Run errands together. Go for a walk together and leave your smart phone at home.
When you and another connect in love in the same way, it’s easy to say, “I love you.” If you give and give and the connection is just not there, try a different way of connecting.
Say, “I love you,” in a way that leaves the recipient recharged with your love.
